Join us on a delightful semi-private food tour (approx. 10 ppl) around the Central Market of Athens to celebrate our local food culture and savour delicious Greek delicacies. For even more options, take a look at our range of Food Tours in Athens.
Follow your dedicated food expert to our favourite local bakery. Dig into the crunchy phyllo of a scrumptious spanakopita with feta cheese, and watch the “dough show” of how traditional bougatsa is made before you taste it – just like pizza tossing, but five times the size and ten times as thin.
A perfect Greek breakfast always starts with good quality coffee. Visit the oldest coffee roaster of Athens and engage in their daily coffee ritual of making Greek coffee on hot sand – a 500-year-old technique first used in the desert! They serve it hot in a small cup with a thin layer of bubbly foam on top, what we call “kaimaki”.
Skip the tourist traps to find your way to a Greek deli. Meet the warm-hearted family behind it, who treats our guests as friends. They welcome us with a glass of Greek wine or spirits, before we travel around Greece with exquisite feta, graviera, olives and cold-cuts, – this is your chance to taste another Greek specialty similar to prosciutto, an air-dried cured beef delicacy named “pastourma”.
No Greek food tour can claim to be authentic if it does not include a taste of Greek yogurt. Do you think you know the real deal? Maybe not… Most of our guests haven’t tried the original Greek yogurt – which makes it undoubtedly the highlight of our culinary walk. Yum!
Just when you think you’ve had enough, remember… more than 20 tastings are included in this Taste of Athens Walking Food Tour – after all, we want you to get the full taste of the city! The warm-up is over. Enjoy a full meal at a local eatery, the most popular hangout for the people of the market. Taste various dishes-meze style, cooked by talented chefs who honour traditional Greek cuisine. Among others, try out some delicious dolmades, our stuffed grape leaves dipped in tzatziki sauce and some mouth-watering saganaki!
Sweet memories last forever. On our last stop, we take you to a renowned Athenian pastry shop in the hip neighbourhood of Psyrri. Famous for finger-licking good local desserts, such as a unique flavoured ice-cream made from a local product found exclusively in Greece. We might even have the chance to get a glimpse of how baklava is made on spot and learn its secrets. How can it get better than that?
Want to get to know more about our national sweetener? We recommend The Wall of Greek Honey. Along with wine and olive oil, honey has been feeding Greeks since ancient times. Visit a local store to immerse yourself into the sweet world of Greek nectar, taste thyme honey from the Greek islands, forest honey from Mount Athos, and… did you know there’s even bitter honey?
